Bali residential area

What are the best student residential areas in Bali?

Of course, no one area will suit everyone and the right decision will depend on two factors:

1. Your interests and plans

Your interests play an important role in choosing the right residential area. Here some examples:
Do you want to go partying several times a week during the semester and is shopping one of your favorite activities? Then Kuta or Seminyak might be the right place for you. Do you like it a little quieter lifestyle, a lot of sports and want to be close to the best surf spots on the island? Then Jimbaran is probably a good choice as a residential area for your semester abroad in Bali.

2. Distance to the university

Since you will spend a large part of your semester abroad on campus, you should consider the distance from your accommodation to the University in the decision-making process. Depending on which program you have chosen, the location of the University differs.

Living in Canggu

Canggu is probably the hippest residential area in Bali with the hipster scene having only developed itself here in recent years. Yoga studios, organic cafes and small trendy shops as well as authentic boutiques can now be found on almost every corner in Canggu. What was once an insider tip among backpackers and expats is now no longer a secret. On the black volcanic rock, sandy beaches of Canggu, countless surfers enjoy chasing the best waves every day. Many beautiful villas, cheap homestays, good cafes and restaurants as well as great options for partying are an enticing combination for most students. For this, many students don't mind the comparatively long journey to the University to live this lifestyle in their leisure time. In terms of price, Canggu ranks among the the upper midfield among the residential areas. There is however something for every budget.

Living in Kerobokan

Kerobokan is significantly less touristy than most of the other residential areas in Bali listed here, which is also reflected in the prices. In Kerobokan there are comparatively cheap apartments, villas and homestays. Eating in the warungs and restaurants is also much cheaper than in the more touristy areas. A real paradise for bargain hunters who want to spend their stay abroad in an authentic Balinese residential area. Kerobokan is surrounded by picturesque rice fields, but is not directly by the ocean. Nevertheless, you can be on the beach in Canggu or Seminyak within a few minutes.

Living in Seminyak

If you like shopping you will love Seminyak! Located just north of Kuta, there are many international tourists, expats, start-ups and often the most international students in Bali. Seminyak is often described as the trendiest area in Bali where there are countless chic restaurants, cafes, shops and boutiques. Many modern villas, apartments and high-class hotels shape the image of Seminyak. At the famous Double Six Beach, hundreds of tourists try surfing for the first time every day or simply enjoy the unique sunset with a chilled Bintang. There are also many popular clubs and bars where people like to party until the wee hours of the morning. Seminyak is viewed as a fancier Kuta, which is a little more sophisticated and less chaotic. Of course, this also affects the prices. Seminyak is one of the most expensive residential area in Bali, this applies to the accommodation as well as the restaurants and bars. Nevertheless, the prices are quite affordable for most European students.

Living in Kuta

There is a running joke that there are more Australians in Kuta than Balinese! Young Australians and short-term vacationers from all over the world have fallen in love with Kuta. You won't experience authentic Balinese culture here, as Kuta has developed into an area that is all about partying, drinking and western favourites. Kuta is not usually one of the most popular residential areas among students in Bali. The party mile of Bali is definitely worth a visit though. Very few students leave the island without having once celebrated on the famous Legian Road. There are also a few students in Kuta who have found a nice villa or apartment in the quieter corners of this residential area.

Life on the Bukit Peninsula is quite relaxed with low prices for accommodation and restaurants making Jimbaran a popular residential area for students. Tips for finding an apartment in Bali

  • No commitment & payment before you visit the property
  • Get to know your new roommates locally
  • Negotiate the price with the landlord on site
  • Have the rental contract documented in writing
  • Sign a lease for a maximum of one month
  • More flexibility, less risk & better prices

Do not commit yourself to accommodation for more than a month unless you are XNUMX% sure that you want to stay there for most of your semester abroad in Bali. As everywhere in the world, it is rather difficult to terminate a contract before the end date without financial losses.

Airbnb or similar platforms offer a wonderful opportunity to explore different residential areas in advance and to live "on a trial basis" in the respective region for a few days before you commit to accommodation longer term.
